WEST JORDAN, Utah. (CITC) — A Utah mayor is demanding considered one of his local school boards immediately remove greater than 100 “pornographic” books from its school libraries.
Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs spoke on behalf of his constituents Tuesday. He told the Jordan School District (JSD) school board that “scores of residents” have reached out to him regarding “inappropriate materials” in JSD libraries.
No specific books were mentioned during Tuesday’s meeting. Nevertheless, JSD parents have pointed to titles “Milk and Honey” and “Oryx and Crake” on social media, each of which have been challenged by parents nationwide for his or her sexually explicit contents.
“To a big extent, I want to let you know, they feel like they should not being heard,” Staggs said. “This filth must be faraway from our schools.”
Staggs, who has two children attending JSD, claims that greater than 100 library books within the district violate state standards. A law passed last yr prohibits any materials containing “pornographic or indecent” content from being placed in Utah public schools.
